Complex Access and Communication: A 3-Part Approach for Emerging Communicators
Archived webinar from Jan. 15, & Feb 19 2020 with Kim Elliott , Carrie Luse & Kathy Howery
Children with complex motor and/or sensory needs, who would benefit from AAC, have many challenges. Knowing where to begin and how to progress can be daunting. A 3-step approach to building tools, which teases apart Participation, Access, and Language (PAL) will be discussed. We will discuss the rationale for the PAL approach and demonstrate the process through case studies, exploring how each of the 3 areas of PAL were addressed with each child. Examples will be provided of how the 3 areas, when given time to develop, can come together in a comprehensive, multi-modal AAC system. Length: 59:44 Part 2 Building upon the 3-part approach outlined in Session 1, we will look at specific tools and strategies in each of the PAL areas. A handout for organizing tools will be discussed in the context of a brief case study. Length: 1:07:28 |

Classroom-based Communication Instruction: Project Core Overview and Year 2 Insights with Lori GeistArchived webinar from January 24, 2018.
The session will report on Project Core, a multi-year effort aimed at developing an implementation program for teaching students with significant disabilities to use symbolic language using a core vocabulary approach to augmentative and alternative communication. The program’s Universal Core vocabulary and evidence-based teaching practices are integrated into common instructional routines and daily activities that occur in the classroom. The program has been implemented and evaluated in more than 25 classrooms to date. In this webinar, we will review the current set of free professional development modules, planning resources and tools, and present data reflecting teacher and student outcomes from year 2 of the project. The project is funded through a Stepping Up Technology Implementation grant from the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. Length: 1:03:41 |

Ruby Bridges was Alone: The Descriptive Teaching Method for Emergent StudentsArchived webinar from March 28, 2018 with Erin Sheldon
Students with complex needs require support in language development, early concept development, vocabulary, and background knowledge. We often struggle to find the time and technology to embed AAC modelling in our lessons and classroom activities, particularly in inclusive classrooms. This webinar was first developed for a teacher who asked “don’t tell me WHY I should model AAC, tell me HOW.” This webinar will explore simple, hands-on descriptive teaching strategies. Based on Gail van Tatenhove’s descriptive teaching method, we will examine how to shift from referential to descriptive teaching to scaffold access to the regular curriculum for emergent students. We will see how the simplest graphic organizers can support our AAC modelling and foster language growth in our students with complex needs. Length: 1:13:11 |

Strategies for Supporting AAC Team Buy-In and Implementation (CCN) with Lauren EndersEven when teachers, therapists, and other team members have the opportunity to learn about best practices in AAC, many find it challenging to successfully implement AAC as a team. Those implementing AAC may become comfortable with selecting appropriate systems, acquiring those systems and even customizing them, but can feel somewhat lost when it comes to supporting AAC implementation consistently across the educational environment. In this webinar, we will review creative ideas and resources for encouraging and supporting AAC implementation as a cohesive educational team (with a focus on core vocabulary principles and aided language stimulation).
